Carpet and Rug Cleaning
Not all rugs are created equal, and if you have a stained, or a heavily trafficked carpet that you need to clean, you are going to want to make sure you know what type of material it is that you are working with, to ensure that you don't damage it during the process. As long as you haven't spend more than a couple hundred dollars on the rug, you will be alright cleaning it with most commercial cleaning products and solutions, however, if you have spent more than this amount on the rug, you may want to consult the manufacturer to determine the best route for cleaning.
For most carpets and rugs that you buy though, most off the shelf cleaning products will work wonders for your stain or heavily trafficked area. The manufacturers of these products understand that your carpets care is of the utmost importance, and put out products that are harsh enough to remove stains and break down heavily discolored and dingy areas, but are also gentle enough to preserve the material and fabrics. Even though manufacturers put in the extra time to ensure you have a harder time destroying your carpet, there are still a couple things you are going to want to keep in mind.
In order to ensure that you don't destroy the entire carpet with a new cleaner, you are first going to want to spot test the solution on a non visible area of the carpet. Wait a day or two once you have cleaned the spot, and continue looking back to see if the colors have changed. Some rug manufacturers use low quality inks during the weaving and dying process, and some of the harsher cleaners will actually pull the ink from the carpet, leaving a dull spot.
As long as the color has stayed in the area that you treated, you can then begin treating the whole carpet with the solution. If carpet shows no change to any color that you want to stop using immediately and start trying to remove the chemicals from the area rug that you do.. While you may not be able to stop the discoloration process, you can at least slow it down to keep it from being immediately visible. So before you try a new carpet cleaning chemical or solution on your rug, you are going to want to spot test it on a non visible area.
